Lights-On Learning.
After a few weeks break due to work, I’m releasing this follow-up conversation with Julia Black, a former TV producer turned education innovator, where we discuss her groundbreaking “Lights On” framework and recently published book Lights On Learning: A parent’s blueprint for happy, fulfilled, curious kids.
If you missed Julia’s previous guest appearances, her “Lights On” framework, reimagines education by focusing on internal learning processes and parental involvement. The approach treats disengagement not as a problem, but as an opportunity for growth.
Moving away from traditional “outside-in” education, Black’s approach focuses on understanding the internal learning landscape and emphasizes the role of parents as primary role models and family leaders. Rather than viewing disengagement as a problem, the Lights On methodology sees it as an opportunity for growth and transformation.
Through compelling case studies, Black illustrates the framework’s effectiveness, including the story of six-year-old Bryony, who overcame severe writing anxiety within six months through parent-led intervention. Another remarkable example involves a student named Ollie, who experienced a complete learning transformation in just 12 hours after finding his “switch” through visual storytelling, following years of special educational needs intervention. These success stories demonstrate how the Lights On approach can rapidly unlock a child’s potential when parents and educators understand how to identify and activate a learner’s unique catalyst for engagement.
The Lights On framework operates on a spectrum with six different signatures for awareness and calibration, helping parents and teachers recognize and work with different learning states. Black emphasizes that this isn’t about implementing another set of behavioral strategies, but rather about creating a fundamental shift in how we approach learning and development. The methodology is designed to be accessible to all parents, regardless of their educational background, and focuses on building self-awareness and understanding the fluid nature of learning states.
We also discuss AI. As AI becomes more prevalent, Jule sees her Lights on approach as crucial for developing human creativity and problem-solving skills. With an upcoming audiobook and new collaborative projects, she’s building a community that prioritizes nurturing curious, fulfilled learners over traditional success metrics.
